Military Coup: They’ve Welcomed It In Niger And You See What Traore Is Doing In Burkina Faso-Fayomi

Oluwafemi Fayomi, a lecturer at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti’s Department of Political Science, has expressed concern regarding the increasing acceptance of military rule in certain African regions. In an interview with Signature TV, he pointed out that escalating governance issues on the continent have led many citizens to consider military intervention as a viable option.

Addressing the recent coups in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, Fayomi emphasized the growing public dissatisfaction with civilian governments. He suggested that the military is now seen by disillusioned citizens facing corruption, insecurity, and economic difficulties as a potential solution. “People are open to military governance. They’ve embraced it in Niger, and you can see the support for Traoré in Burkina Faso,” he remarked, highlighting the popularity of Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

Fayomi elaborated that this shift in perspective indicates a wider crisis of trust in democratic institutions across various African nations. Although democracy is still regarded as the preferred global framework, failures in its implementation in some countries have diminished confidence, making military rule seem, at least temporarily, appealing to those struggling.

He noted that the warm reception of military juntas in places like Niger and Burkina Faso reflects the result of prolonged governance failures. Nevertheless, he warned that military regimes often find it challenging to sustain initial public favor, particularly when faced with the same systemic issues that affected their civilian predecessors.
