What Do Abbreviations Like “MR,” “MRS,” “RVSP,” “AM,” and “PM” on the News Hub Mean? July 16, 2022, 3:34 PM An acronym seeks to make a longer term or expression easier to remember by shortening it. Despite the fact that many people are skilled acronym users, the majority of them find it difficult to completely explain what they mean.
When you pick up the phone at work, you might hear anything along the lines of “Call for me, Mr. Smith.” In this post, I’ll define a few slang terms and acronyms that are frequently used.
1. A.M & P.M
They are essential when talking about or documenting time. For example, I got to town around 4:00. Both the English words “afternoon” and “before noon” are abbreviations for the Latin word “post meridiem,” which means “afternoon.”
2. E.g
The letters “e.g.” stand for the example given.
It is customary to start a list of examples with a broad classification, such as “or.” To give you an idea, I’ve read a lot of novels. A math book, an English book, and a physics book are some examples.
3. Etc
The Latin word et cetera, which means “and others,” designates the phrase “and others of the same type.” Several examples are given, and then ETC is mentioned a few times.
4. R.S.V.P
The French phrase “responses s’il vous plait” literally translates to “please react.” It has a purpose and is typically affixed to invitation letters for this reason.
5. SMS
Even though the abbreviation “SMS” stands for “short messaging service,” most people just use it as a shorthand.
6. PIN
PIN is an acronym for “Personal Identification Number,” which also serves as the full explanation of the phrase.
7. MR. & MRS.
These alterations to formal names like “Mr. Smith” are mostly used to indicate the gender of the person being addressed.
“MR” stands for “Mature, Responsible,” whereas “MRS” stands for “Mature, Responsible, and Submissive.”
8 SIM cards.
Although the acronym “SIM” stands for “Subscriber Identity Module,” it is more frequently used.
