Lawyer Olu Akanbi has reacted to the recent court judgment concerning the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as a ruling that may ease longstanding tension in the South-East. He spoke during an interview on TVC News, where he assessed how the decision might be received by residents of the region.
Akanbi noted that the agitation over the years had taken a toll on communities, leading to repeated disruptions and economic setbacks. He said many households had faced direct or indirect consequences, with some dealing with violence, loss of relatives, and the collapse of small and medium-scale businesses.
He explained that the judgment could mark a turning point for those who have endured hardship, especially families who lost loved ones during periods of unrest. He added that the economic impact in the region had been severe, as numerous businesses shut down during episodes of instability, leaving many people without a means of livelihood.
On whether the ruling might heighten tension or restore calm, Akanbi said the mood among affected residents suggests that people are more eager for peace than confrontation. He stressed that many individuals who suffered losses see closure as more important than further agitation.
He also pointed out that the emotional weight carried by families who experienced violence remains a major part of the public reaction. According to him, many in the region simply want stability after years of uncertainty.
In his words: βWe definitely see this as a good development. A lot of people have died. A lot of businesses have been shut down all because of this particular agitation. If you ask a single person, a man who has lost somebody, who has lost a child, who has lost a wife or a relative what this judgment amounts to, the person will tell you this is the best thing that could ever happen. If you ask anybody who has lost businesses what this amounts to, heβll celebrate this.β
