Human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara, in a video broadcast on Symfoni TV, recounted the severe treatment Nnamdi Kanu allegedly suffered before his extradition to Nigeria.
According to Opara, Kanu “was chained by his hands and legs for seven days, with a large generator positioned near his window,” a situation that subjected him to extreme discomfort. The constant noise from the generator, he explained, not only intensified the physical suffering from the restraints but also caused significant psychological torment.
Opara stressed that such conditions can result in long-term emotional and bodily harm, emphasizing that no human being should endure this kind of treatment, regardless of the allegations they face. He added that Kanu continued to experience harsh conditions upon his return, including extended solitary confinement by the DSS a measure he described as mentally devastating and capable of breaking an individual’s spirit.
The lawyer criticized what he sees as systemic human rights abuses and emphasized that humane treatment is a legally guaranteed right. He warned that violations weaken the nation’s moral standing.
Opara also raised concerns about political meddling in the judiciary, asserting that judicial independence must be preserved and that political pressure on judges threatens the integrity of the legal system.
As the court prepares to deliver its judgment, Opara urged authorities to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law, insisting that these principles must guide every decision in the case.
