Jonathan Rejects 2027, History May Judge Him For Walking Away When Nigeria Needed Him – Markson

Talks about a possible return to politics by former President Goodluck Jonathan have picked up pace after First Daily announced a nationwide online poll, The Sun reported on October 11, 2025.

Titled “2027: Should Goodluck Jonathan Run?”, the digital survey will canvass opinions from Nigerians in all six geopolitical zones to gauge public feeling about a Jonathan bid in the 2027 general election.

Daniel Iworiso-Markson, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of First Daily, said the poll forms part of the outlet’s push for data-driven journalism and aims to foster fact-based discussion around politics.

He stated the exercise is intended to go beyond mere curiosity and produce useful insight into what citizens expect from the country’s next leader.

Iworiso-Markson observed that Jonathan’s name still provokes strong debate: some see him as a stabilizing, experienced hand, while others believe his time in national politics should be over.

He warned that if Jonathan declines to run, future assessments might fault him for stepping aside “when Nigeria needed him most” — a remark that provoked a storm of responses across social media and other channels.

Proponents of a Jonathan comeback argue it could help rebuild national cohesion and refocus economic policy, while opponents question whether he retains the clout and contemporary relevance required to govern effectively.

Iworiso-Markson added that the poll will be run transparently and inclusively, with options for Nigerians at home and abroad to participate.

Organizers say the poll’s findings should offer an early snapshot of voter priorities and sentiment as the country moves toward the 2027 elections. See, More, Here>>>>
