It’s A Shame Akpabio Asked BAT For Police Officers To Escort Lawmakers To Their Constituencies-Kalgo

Political analyst Idris Kalgo has taken a swipe at Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his recent appeal to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider aspects of the ongoing police reform, particularly the withdrawal of police escorts from public office holders.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Kalgo described Akpabio’s request as insensitive and out of touch with the reality faced by millions of Nigerians who live daily with insecurity and little or no protection.

He argued that it was troubling for lawmakers to demand special security arrangements at a time when ordinary citizens are exposed to kidnappings, armed robbery, and violent attacks across the country.

Kalgo’s criticism followed Akpabio’s plea on December 19, 2025, during the presentation of the 2026 budget. At the event, the Senate President urged the president to allow lawmakers access to police escorts, claiming that economic pressures and worsening security conditions make it unsafe for legislators to travel to their constituencies without protection.

However, Kalgo noted that the police reform initiated by President Tinubu was meant to address the misuse of security personnel by elites while communities remain understaffed and vulnerable.

He stressed that if insecurity is severe enough to endanger lawmakers, then it is even more dangerous for citizens who lack the resources and influence to protect themselves.

According to Kalgo, the request exposes a double standard where those in power seek comfort and safety, while the wider population is expected to endure the consequences of a broken security system.

He urged political leaders to focus on strengthening community policing and improving national security rather than prioritizing personal protection.
