Legal practitioner and political commentator Kenneth Okonkwo has stated that the current leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was officially recognized by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, after the commission reviewed the party’s transition process and found no irregularities.
Okonkwo explained that the recognition by INEC confirms the legitimacy of the party’s leadership, noting that the officials have already been fully integrated into the commission’s official portal. According to him, this step signifies that the commission carried out its verification procedures and was satisfied that the leadership structure complied with all legal and administrative requirements.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Okonkwo remarked that the approval from Yakubu carries significant weight because of the INEC chairman’s reputation for being cautious, particularly following past controversies over technical glitches during elections.
He argued that the absence of any technical problems in the ADC’s transition process demonstrates that the party leadership went to great lengths to ensure strict compliance with electoral guidelines and legal provisions required by the electoral body.
Okonkwo emphasized that if there had been any irregularity, even a minor one, the leadership would not have been recognized by INEC. According to him, the commission’s decision shows that the party’s internal processes were transparent and met the necessary standards expected by the electoral authority.
During the interview, he said the recognition by Yakubu further validates the legitimacy of the party’s leadership, stressing that the careful scrutiny applied by the INEC chairman makes the endorsement even more significant.
“It was Professor Yakubu Mahmood that recognized the ADC leadership. Mahmood that we know his technical glitch history looked at the process that we took and saw no technical glitch and recognized us. Then you can imagine that we went the extra mile because if he had seen any glitch, no matter how small, he wouldn’t have ever tried it,” Okonkwo said.
He concluded that the development leaves little room for administrative disputes over the party’s leadership, adding that the verification carried out by INEC has effectively strengthened the legal standing of the current ADC structure…See More
