Former President Goodluck Jonathan has questioned the authenticity of the reported coup in Guinea-Bissau, noting that President Umaro Sissoco Embaló himself announced the takeover before military leaders addressed the public.
Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV, Jonathan described the unusual circumstances surrounding the alleged coup. “It is president Embaló that announced the coup before later the military man came up to address the world that they were in charge everywhere else. Then Embaló has already announced the coup, which is strange—not only announcing the coup, but while the coup took place, he was using his phone and addressing media organizations across the world that he has been arrested,” he said.
The former Nigerian leader expressed skepticism based on his experience with military coups in Africa. “I’m a Nigerian, close to 70, and I know how they keep heads of state when a coup takes place. Recently I was a mediator in Mali, and within that period we had a military coup. The military don’t take over government and the sitting president that they overthrew would be allowed to be addressing press conferences and announcing that he has been arrested. Why does this happen? Who is fooling who?” Jonathan questioned.
Speaking on how he was able to leave the country following the coup, he revealed that both President Bola Tinubu and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara arranged aircraft to evacuate him from Guinea-Bissau during the crisis. Jonathan explained that Ivory Coast’s proximity to Guinea-Bissau and traditional relationships among Francophone countries enabled Ivorian authorities to secure landing permits more quickly than Nigeria, allowing their aircraft to reach him first.
