Avigdor Liberman, leader of Yisrael Beytenu, demands that authorities handle extremist ultra-Orthodox demonstrators who stormed and disrupted an Israel Defense Forces event in Bnei Brak as terrorists.
According to a report by The Times of Israel on January 12, 2026, the incident occurred during a conference honoring parents of recruits in the Haredi-focused Hasmonean Brigade, where protesters forcefully entered the venue and assaulted uniformed soldiers.
Liberman declares it unacceptable that an IDF soldier cannot walk safely in places like Bnei Brak or Jerusalem’s Mea Shearim neighborhood without facing physical attacks.
He insists that identical violence against troops in the West Bank would immediately trigger terrorism charges and countermeasures.
Therefore, the perpetrators of this assault deserve the same classification and severe response as terrorists.
Speaking ahead of his party’s Knesset faction meeting, Liberman points out that no Haredi politicians from Shas or United Torah Judaism, nor any prominent rabbis, have publicly denounced the attackers. He views their silence as tacit approval.
The lawmaker attributes the growing boldness to ongoing tensions over mandatory military service for ultra-Orthodox men.
