According to a report by The Times Of Israel on December 28, 2025, the Defense Ministry has announced the delivery of the first operational high-power laser interception system, named “Iron Beam,” from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to the Israel Defense Forces.
Tested extensively, the system has successfully intercepted rockets, mortar shells, and drones. It will now be integrated into the Israeli Air Force and become a key part of Israel’s multi-layered air defense network alongside Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow systems.
Describing the handover as “a historic occasion,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said the system represents “the first time in the world that a high-power laser interception system has reached operational maturity.” He added, “It changes the rules of the game and sends a clear message to all our enemies… do not test us.”
Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram highlighted that the delivery “marks the transition from development to serial production,” calling Iron Beam “only the beginning of the technological revolution.” He noted the system is expected to improve Israel’s defensive capabilities and create a more favorable cost balance between threats and expensive interceptors.
IAF Chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar described the moment as “especially moving,” emphasizing that the system is “another vital component in the air defense battle of our forces, who proved their operational capabilities during the war.”
Rafael CEO Yoav Turgeman expressed pride in the milestone, stating the company is “proud to deliver… the most advanced laser system in the world for intercepting aerial threats.” He added that even during intense combat, Rafael demonstrated “impressive operational capabilities using high-power lasers.”
The system is also called Or Eitan, in memory of Capt. Eitan Oster, an IDF officer killed in southern Lebanon. During the ceremony, his father – one of the system’s developers – recited the Shehecheyanu blessing, a prayer marking new and significant experiences.
