US Senator John Fetterman declared on Thursday that Tehran must face military confrontation over its advancing nuclear program, insisting that the Islamic Republic only responds to strength and power.
According to a report by Iran International on February 20, 2026, he expressed strong opposition to allowing Iran to develop a nuclear bomb, arguing that permitting such an outcome would be unacceptable.
Fetterman emphasized that Iran has repeatedly shown it reacts solely to demonstrations of superior force rather than diplomatic negotiations.
He compared dealing with the regime to confronting cancer, stating that you cannot negotiate with it and must instead attack it directly with overwhelming power.
In his words, “Now we’ve demonstrated that the only thing Iran ever responds to is strength and power. You can’t negotiate with cancer. You have to attack it and go right at it with superior force.”
The senator, who stood alone among Democrats last year in calling for more decisive measures against Iran, questioned the lack of direct action by the United States.
He pointed out that Iran possesses approximately 900 pounds of near weapons-grade uranium and asked why the US has not targeted those stockpiles.
Fetterman argued that striking the material would hold Tehran accountable and prevent it from crossing the nuclear threshold.
He criticized the current approach as ineffective, suggesting that restraint has only emboldened the regime rather than curbing its ambitions.
