Instead Of Engaging Those Who Killed Over 200 Nigerians, They Were Busy Shooting In The Air-Farotimi

Human rights lawyer and political activist, Dele Farotimi has criticized the Nigerian military for what he described as a shocking display of negligence during the recent massacre in Yelewata, Benue State, where over 200 Nigerians were reportedly killed.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Farotimi condemned the failure of security forces to intervene effectively despite their close proximity to the attack site.

“Where you have a military forward operating base less than a kilometer from Yelewata. Instead of engaging those who killed over 200 Nigerians, they were busy shooting in the air,” Farotimi said, expressing outrage at the military’s response to one of the deadliest incidents in the state’s recent history.

He described the situation as “a national shame,” accusing the authorities of treating Nigerian lives with indifference and failing to uphold their constitutional duty to protect citizens. According to him, the continued killings in Benue and other parts of the country reflect a deeper systemic collapse within Nigeria’s security architecture.

Farotimi questioned how armed assailants could operate freely for hours without being confronted by nearby troops, suggesting possible complicity or gross incompetence on the part of the military. He urged the government to conduct an independent investigation into the incident and hold accountable those who failed to act.

The lawyer further lamented that such tragedies have become frequent, with communities across Nigeria being abandoned to their fate amid rising insecurity. He warned that unless there is transparency and reform within the armed forces, public trust in the military’s ability to protect citizens will continue to erode.
