According to a report by Punch, on Monday December 1, 2025, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has ruled out any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election as a vice-presidential candidate.
He made it clear that he is focused only on running for the office of President.
His position follows fresh political discussions suggesting that he could be paired with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on a joint ticket.
The speculation began after comments from media entrepreneur and Atiku’s ally, Dele Momodu.
Momodu had hinted that Atiku might consider Amaechi as a possible partner if Peter Obi refused to run with him.
His remarks triggered wide reactions within political circles, especially among supporters of different opposition blocs.
However, Amaechi responded swiftly through his media aide, David Iyofor.
He dismissed every suggestion linking him to a vice-presidential role or any alliance built around such an arrangement.
He stressed that Amaechi is focused on the presidency and has no intention of stepping down for anyone or playing a secondary role.
According to his aide, Amaechi also believes the next President of Nigeria should come from Southern Nigeria.
For this reason, he is pursuing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress.
”Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not.
Amaechi is not aware of, and will not be part of any talk to be running mate to anybody. For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria and not to be a running mate to anybody,” Iyofor said.
