I’m Not Near White, If I Stand Next To My Mom, She Is Full Caucasian, Blonde Hair AndGreen Eyes-Natasha

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has addressed comments about her complexion and background, stating that while she is light-skinned, she does not identify as white.

The lawmaker made the clarification during an interview on Mic On Podcast, hosted by Seun Akinbaloye, where she reacted to a question suggesting that she is white. Responding candidly, Akpoti-Uduaghan explained that her appearance has often attracted public curiosity and, at times, misconceptions about her identity.

“I think I’m fairly light-skinned, but I’m not near white. Like if I stand next to my mom, she is full Caucasian, blond hair and green eyes,” she said on the programme.

The senator noted that her complexion is a reflection of her mixed heritage but stressed that it does not diminish her Nigerian identity or cultural roots. She explained that growing up in Nigeria shaped her worldview, values and connection to the country, regardless of her physical features.

Akpoti-Uduaghan also spoke about how public figures, particularly women, are frequently subjected to scrutiny over their looks rather than their ideas or contributions. According to her, questions about her skin colour often overshadow more substantive conversations about governance, leadership and national development.

The interview segment sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians weighing in on issues of identity, colourism and the diverse backgrounds that make up the country. Some commentators praised the senator for addressing the topic calmly, while others highlighted the need to move beyond appearance-based narratives in public discourse.
