In a recent interview on Arise TV, Audu Maikori, founder and chairman of Chocolate City Entertainment Group, spoke about the controversies surrounding Kaduna State and his 2017 detention over a tweet about violence in southern Kaduna. He emphasized the importance of accuracy in reporting, especially during periods of communal unrest, and explained that he had retracted the tweet after discovering it was based on false information from his driver.
According to Maikori, “If you were in Kaduna in 2017, 300 people died between the months of January and February.” He used this statistic to illustrate the volatile nature of the situation at the time and why authorities were sensitive to unverified reports, even as he maintained that his arrest was unwarranted. Both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal later ruled the detention unlawful, awarding damages in his favor.
Maikori criticized former Governor El-Rufai for what he described as a consistent pattern of persecution and misuse of state power. He noted that the former governor had personally overseen his case despite its resolution in the courts, and that such actions reflected a broader issue of impunity in governance.
He stressed that his intervention was not personal but about defending free speech and accountability. “Leadership is not just about talk or political image,” Maikori said, “it is about acting responsibly and prioritizing the welfare of communities, ensuring that power is exercised transparently and fairly.”
Maikori concluded by urging Nigerians to learn from his experience about the importance of due process, fairness, and ethical leadership. He highlighted the need for leaders to be held accountable and warned against allowing power to be used as a weapon against dissent or civil liberties….. Discover More
