Chillie Igbawua, a senior figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has responded to recent comments by Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, dismissing the opposition party as “toothless and spineless.” Speaking in an interview with a Trust TV correspondent, Igbawua provided his perspective on the party’s position and prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections, following the high-profile defection of Kano State political heavyweight, Alhaji Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, to the ADC.
Vice President Shettima had recently characterized the ADC as lacking influence and internal strength, suggesting that the party’s members did not have the substance to pose a serious challenge to the ruling party. However, Igbawua dismissed these claims as a misunderstanding of the party’s structure and strategy.
“Sometimes, we are happy when we realize that they don’t understand us, and that is why they keep chasing shadows,” Igbawua said. He emphasized that even in areas where opponents have made concerted efforts to curb the party’s growth, the ADC has managed to outmaneuver them, demonstrating resilience and strategic foresight. “Even in areas where they have been very keen to stop the ADC, they eventually discover that they have only thrown their weight around after we have already crossed,” he added.
Igbawua also analyzed the implications of Kwankwaso’s decision to join the ADC, describing it as a significant boost for the party’s visibility and political strength. According to him, the former Kano State governor’s presence within the party enhances its capacity to organize, mobilize supporters, and position itself as a credible alternative in the forthcoming elections.
The ADC chieftain’s comments highlight the party’s determination to remain a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape despite criticism from senior figures in the ruling party. Igbawua insisted that misjudgments by opponents, including dismissive statements by high-ranking officials, often serve to reinforce the party’s resolve rather than weaken it.
As the 2027 elections approach, Igbawua believes the ADC is well-positioned to consolidate support and challenge the ruling party, leveraging both strategic alliances and its growing grassroots network…See More
