An Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has alleged that former military heads of state, the late General Murtala Mohammed and the late General Sani Abacha, would never have permitted foreign military incursions into Nigeria during their leadership.
Speaking during an interview with Daily Trust, Sheikh Gumi contrasted past military leadership with the current administration’s approach. “Imagine if it’s Murtala Mohammed or Abacha that is ruling now, this kind of thing can never be dreamt of because they will stand up and see that they protect the integrity of Nigeria. And this is the kind of leader I think we should encourage the president to be. He needs our support. But if we show that we don’t like him, if we show weakness to him, then because of our weakness, it will affect him too,” he said.
The cleric expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity for self-defense without foreign intervention, citing the country’s population, resources, and educated workforce. “We can protect ourselves from foreign invasion. We don’t have anything to fear about them. We have the population. We have the landmarks. We have even the education that we can do. A lot of Nigerians—doctors, engineers—are there helping the American economy. If they come back here, they will do a lot,” he stated.
Sheikh Gumi stated that Nigeria’s main need is political will rather than external assistance, calling on citizens to support President Bola Tinubu in resisting what he described as imperialist pressures. He argued that public backing would strengthen the president’s resolve to protect Nigerian sovereignty and stand firm against foreign powers seeking to intervene in the country’s internal security matters.
