Former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Edo State, Mr. Henry Idahagbon, has described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as one of the best performing ministers despite controversies surrounding his public profile.
Mr. Idahagbon made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, where he spoke on governance, ministerial performance, and recent developments within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Speaking during the interview, the former Federal Commissioner representing Edo, Ondo, and Ekiti states on the Federal Civil Service Commission acknowledged the public perception of the FCT minister while emphasizing his record in office.
“Well, we can’t deny the fact that Nyesom Wike, as controversial as he is, remains one of the best performing ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja,” Idahagbon said.
He referenced his personal experience residing in the nation’s capital, stating that his assessment was based on direct observation over several years. “I’ve had the privilege of living here for the past five years. And I can say that his interventions, as he became minister, was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has been revolutionary,” he said.
Idahagbon attributed some of the changes witnessed in the FCT to the leadership approach adopted since Wike’s appointment by President Tinubu, noting that the administration introduced measures that altered the pace and scope of development. “And I think we should give him credit for that,” he added.
While acknowledging that Wike’s policies may not enjoy universal approval, Idahagbon stressed that disagreement with policy choices does not negate performance. “You may not like his policies,” he said.
He also offered a personal reflection on how he might have approached the role if he were in the minister’s position, referencing internal party counsel. “And if I were in his shoes, I probably would take a large chunk of the advice of Barrister Bashiru, the National Secretary of the APC,” Idahagbon stated.
He explained that such advice would involve narrowing focus strictly to ministerial responsibilities within the FCT. “To leave the policies of a Rivers State alone and concentrate on the very good job that he’s doing in Abuja, in the FCT,” he said.
