The National Spokesperson of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Bedford Benjamin Berefa, has raised concerns about the financial management of Rivers State during the six months it was under a sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas.
In an interview with News Central TV, Berefa claimed that over 200 billion naira was reportedly spent during this period, but there are no visible infrastructure projects to show for the large sum.
Berefa stated that it is only right for the State House of Assembly to ask for an explanation from the sole administrator. He believes that several financial issues remain unclear and that the question of accountability cannot be ignored.
He supported the Assembly’s decision to launch a probe, noting that transparency is essential to assure citizens that public funds are being properly managed.
He further argued that the alleged 200 billion naira expenditure, which was supposedly for infrastructure and other projects, has not resulted in any noticeable developments on the ground.
He believes this discrepancy suggests a possible misuse of funds, making it necessary for the sole administrator to provide an explanation.
In his words, “In six months, over 200 billion has been expended on what is termed the infrastructural development and there’s nothing physical, as it were, allegedly to justify that lump sum of money being expended within six months.”
“Of course, there’s a need for that clarity in terms of infrastructure and in terms of other facilities that the sole administrator said that he did with money, and there’s no commensurate equivalent of such expenditure.”
