I Put More Than #16M In That Cassava Farm, When We Harvested, We Couldn’t Even Realize #10m -Farmer

Ben Ameh, a cassava farmer from Idah in Kogi State, has raised alarm over the devastating crash in cassava prices, saying it has left him and many other farmers in financial ruin.

In a report by DAILY TRUST on Monday October 27 2025, Ameh revealed that he cultivated 40 acres of cassava with an investment of over ₦16 million, but the market collapse has made it impossible to recover even ₦10 million. He said the price of cassava per ton dropped sharply from ₦170,000 to just ₦45,000, making it nearly impossible to sell the produce at a profit.

Ameh explained that even at the current low price, farmers still have to bear the cost of transportation, which further erodes any potential earnings. He said the experience has discouraged him from ever attempting cassava farming on such a large scale again.

His words,

“Even at that price, you will still have to pay transport. So, the whole thing is better imagined. I put more than ₦16 million in that farm but when we harvested, we could not even realize ₦10 million. It was a sad experience for me. That was the first time I tried cassava in such large quantity and everything collapsed.”
