In a recent interview on Signature TV, Dean of the School of Business and Social Sciences at Maduka University, Ekwegbe Nsukka, Malachy Ichie, spoke on identity, naming conventions, and ethnic affiliation in Nigeria, with particular reference to political figures and cultural heritage.
During the interview, Ichie stated, “How can Nyesom Wike deny his Igbo name? Is Wike a Latin name?” He used the statement to question the rationale behind individuals distancing themselves from names that, according to him, reflect their ethnic origins.
Ichie explained that names carry deep cultural significance and often serve as markers of lineage, identity, and heritage within Nigerian society. He noted that the denial or reinterpretation of such names may be influenced by political considerations, social positioning, or broader debates about ethnicity and belonging.
He further emphasized that Nyesom Wike currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, highlighting that public figures often become focal points in national conversations about identity due to their visibility and roles in governance. According to him, such discussions tend to reflect underlying societal questions about representation and cultural recognition.
The academic also stressed that Nigeria’s diversity naturally gives rise to differing perspectives on identity, which should be approached with understanding rather than contention. He maintained that acknowledging one’s roots and cultural background contributes to authenticity and helps preserve historical continuity within communities.
Ichie concluded by reiterating that identity should be embraced openly and consistently, noting that names remain an important connection between individuals and their ethnic origins within Nigeria’s multi-ethnic and politically dynamic environment….See More
