According to a report by Fox News, on Monday, March 9, 2026, Donald Trump issued a strong warning regarding Iran’s next supreme leader as the country moves closer to selecting a successor following the death of Ali Khamenei.
Speaking during an interview with ABC News, the United States president suggested that whoever emerges as Iran’s next leader will struggle to remain in power without approval from Washington.
His remarks came as the powerful clerical body responsible for choosing the country’s top authority, the Assembly of Experts, continued deliberations over who should lead the Islamic Republic.
Trump made his position clear when asked about the leadership transition in Tehran.
According to the president, the next supreme leader would need to align with the United States or risk losing stability.
“He’s going to have to get approval from us,” Trump said.
“If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long.”
The comments come at a time of heightened tension in the Middle East, following military confrontations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Reports indicate that Iran’s leadership structure is undergoing major changes after the killing of Khamenei during recent hostilities.
Trump explained that his concern is preventing future conflicts and ensuring that Iran does not continue pursuing nuclear capabilities that could threaten global security.
He said the United States wants a leadership outcome that would avoid repeated military confrontations in the years ahead.
“I don’t want people to have to go back in five years and have to do the same thing again or worse let them have a nuclear weapon,” Trump added during the interview.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials have insisted that the selection of a new supreme leader is strictly an internal matter.
Authorities in Tehran have rejected suggestions that foreign governments, including the United States, should influence the decision….See More
