He Called Your Country A ‘Disgraced Country’ And You Celebrated Him -Shehu Sani Breaks Silence

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticised Nigerians who celebrated recent remarks and actions by the United States, describing them as damaging to the country’s image and citizens.

In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Sani reacted to comments attributed to a U.S. figure and the implications of visa-related decisions affecting Nigeria. He argued that the remarks were directed at the country as a whole, rather than specific political leaders or institutions.

“He called your country a ‘disgraced country’ and you celebrated him. Mind the statement, he didn’t say a disgraced Government or a disgraced President,” Sani wrote. The former lawmaker stressed that the language used targeted Nigeria as a nation and its people, drawing a contrast with how South Africa reportedly responded to similar remarks.

According to him, South Africa resisted such characterisations, while Nigeria appeared to accept them. “He insulted South Africa, they stood up to him. He slammed series of visa restrictions on Nigeria, but spared South Africa,” he stated.

Sani further questioned the logic behind restricting entry or relocation opportunities for citizens of a country described in negative terms, arguing that such actions contradict diplomatic norms and mutual respect. “Who on earth would allow the sons and daughters of a ‘disgraced’ country visit or relocate to their ‘graceful’ country,” he said.

In his post, Sani also criticised what he described as selective recognition or honouring of individuals who had previously made derogatory statements about Nigeria. “A man who cursed your family can’t single you out for honour,” he added.

The former senator addressed the designation of Nigeria under international classifications, noting that such labels apply broadly to the country and its citizens rather than to specific government officials. “The tag is not called a Government of particular concern it’s called a COUNTRY of particular concern, so all citizens are now in the soup,” Sani wrote.

He argued that the consequences of such classifications disproportionately affect ordinary citizens, particularly travelers and tourists, rather than addressing security concerns. “Instead of punishing terrorists, tourists are now punished,” he said.

Sani concluded his remarks with a comparison intended to highlight the impact of travel limitations on Nigerians, suggesting that restricted access to international destinations could shift attention to local alternatives. “If you can’t visit Times Square, manage Obudu ranch,” he wrote.
