Hamas Would Not Give Up Its Weapons Except With The Establishment Of A Palestinian State – Al-Hayya

According to a report by The Times Of Israel, senior Hamas official and head of the group’s negotiation team, Khalil al-Hayya, revealed in an interview published by Al Jazeera that Hamas has reached an understanding with Fatah and other Palestinian factions to form a technocratic committee to oversee governance in Gaza.

Al-Hayya stated that despite recent tensions, “an agreement was reached with Fatah on the matter,” referring to the formation of a nonpartisan body tasked with managing Gaza’s affairs. His comments came shortly after Fatah issued a statement rejecting the proposal made by Hamas and several factions, insisting that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) remains the sole legitimate framework for determining any temporary administrative structure in Gaza.

According to al-Hayya, the proposed committee would serve only as a temporary arrangement aimed at paving the way for Palestinian elections and the eventual establishment of a unified national government. However, he declined to provide a timeline for when the committee might be formed, saying he was unable to predict how long the process would take.

He also reiterated that Hamas’s military wing would not disarm under the current circumstances, stressing that “Hamas would not give up its weapons except with the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

The proposal for a technocratic governing body comes as political divisions between Hamas and Fatah continue to hinder efforts toward Palestinian unity. If implemented, the initiative could mark a step toward reconciliation and a possible framework for rebuilding Gaza’s political and administrative institutions following years of internal division and conflict.
