Hamas: What We Face Now Cannot Be Compared To The War; Back Then, It Was A Daily Genocide

According to a report by Al Jazeera, on Monday December 1, 2025, a senior Hamas official has acknowledged that ceasefire violations are ongoing but characterized the current situation as a substantial improvement compared to active warfare, while calling on the international community to understand the group’s decision-making process.

Hossam Badran, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, made the assessment during an interview with Al Jazeera Mubasher, in which he discussed the current state of the ceasefire agreement and the challenges surrounding its implementation.

“Although violations continue,” Badran said, “this is incomparable to what it was during the war.” He urged the world to try to understand the group’s rationale in taking this course of action.

The Hamas official’s comments suggest the organization views the ceasefire as delivering tangible, if imperfect, relief from previous conditions, despite what he described as continued breaches of the agreement’s terms. His statement appears aimed at justifying Hamas’s decision to enter and maintain the ceasefire arrangement even as difficulties persist.

During the interview, Badran reiterated that Hamas is fully adhering to the ceasefire agreement and actively searching for two remaining bodies of deceased captives buried under rubble in Gaza. He accused Israel of using these bodies as justification to delay progress toward the second phase of the ceasefire.

Badran also indicated that Hamas had realistic expectations about implementation challenges from the outset. “We went to this agreement fully aware of the magnitude of the challenges, whether in the texts contained in it or in the implementation mechanisms, and we are accustomed to the [Israeli] occupation’s evasion of its commitments,” he stated.

The official explained that Hamas’s primary motivation for entering the ceasefire was to halt what he described as violence against Palestinians in Gaza. He said Hamas entered the agreement to stop “the daily genocide war that the occupation was waging against our people and our families in Gaza.”
