Gumi: He Speaks As If He’s Their Commander, His Actions And Deeds Suggest That He’s Above Law-Joe

According to a report by Daily Post, on Sunday, December 28, 2025, prominent All Progressives Congress member Joe Igbokwe voiced serious concerns regarding the conduct of Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi. The APC chieftain argued that Gumi’s recent behaviour indicates a troubling sense of immunity from legal consequences. Igbokwe noted that the scholar consistently advocates for bandits with a level of authority that rivals their own leadership.

Sharing his thoughts on the social media platform X, Igbokwe questioned whether the Sheikh is considered beyond the reach of the nation’s justice system. He observed that Gumi has frequently been heard offering defences for criminal elements and has been seen participating in organised meetings with heavily armed groups in the bush.

Regarding the nature of these interactions, he said, “He speaks as if he is their commander. His actions and deeds suggest that he is above the law.”

The critique comes at a time when Gumi has become increasingly outspoken following recent military operations in Northern Nigeria. Specifically, the cleric has reacted strongly to airstrikes executed by the United States military within Sokoto State.

These strategic aerial operations were carried out in close partnership with the Nigerian government and were specifically designed to neutralise high-level targets associated with ISIS and the Lakurawa terrorist organisation.

Igbokwe’s public stance highlights a growing tension regarding how the government handles influential figures who maintain direct contact with insurgent groups.

By questioning Gumi’s apparent immunity, Igbokwe is calling for a more uniform application of the law, regardless of religious or social standing. He suggests that the cleric’s ability to navigate these dangerous circles without facing state scrutiny undermines the broader fight against insecurity.

As the security situation in the Northwest remains delicate, the rhetoric from both Gumi and his critics like Igbokwe continues to shape the national discourse on counter-terrorism.

The collaboration between international allies and the Nigerian military signifies a shift toward more aggressive containment of extremist factions, yet the internal debate over mediation and advocacy for these groups remains a point of significant friction.

Igbokwe’s observations serve as a blunt reminder of the complexities involved in identifying the line between religious intervention and the potential emboldening of criminal actors.
