Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has claimed that the Nigerian government is aware of the identities and locations of terrorists operating across the country, particularly those involved in banditry and insurgency in the northern region.
Speaking on the worsening security situation in Nigeria, Gumi stated that authorities possess detailed information about many of the armed groups responsible for attacks, kidnappings, and violence in parts of the country.
According to the cleric, the government allegedly knows the names and whereabouts of several individuals involved in terrorist activities, but he questioned why stronger action has not been taken to decisively address the situation.
Gumi, who has previously been involved in dialogue efforts with armed groups in northern Nigeria, made the remarks while discussing the ongoing challenges posed by bandits and insurgents. His comments were reported by Sahara Reporters, which highlighted his concerns about the effectiveness of current security strategies.
Over the past decade, Nigeria has faced serious security threats from groups such as Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and armed bandit groups, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions of the country.
These groups have been responsible for attacks on villages, kidnappings for ransom, assaults on military bases, and violence against civilians, leading to thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people.
Sheikh Gumi has been a controversial figure in discussions surrounding banditry in northern Nigeria. At various times, he has advocated dialogue and negotiations with armed groups, arguing that addressing grievances and offering rehabilitation could help reduce violence.
However, his approach has also attracted criticism from some security analysts and public figures who believe that criminal groups should be confronted primarily through military and law enforcement actions rather than negotiation.
Nigeria’s security agencies have repeatedly stated that they are actively tracking and targeting terrorist networks across the country. Military operations and joint security efforts involving the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Police, and other agencies have led to the arrest or neutralization of several suspected militants in recent years.
Despite these operations, insecurity remains a major national concern, with communities in some parts of the country continuing to experience attacks and kidnappings.
Gumi’s latest remarks have sparked discussions on social media and among security observers, with some people interpreting his comments as a criticism of government strategy, while others question the accuracy of the claim.
Security experts note that while intelligence agencies may possess information about terrorist networks, locating and apprehending armed groups operating in remote forests and difficult terrains can be highly complex and dangerous.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to combating terrorism and restoring stability, while also working with regional partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to tackle insurgent activities across the Lake Chad Basin..See More
