Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress has continued to shape political conversations in the state. In an interview on Channels Television, Professor Ritchard Wokocha of Rivers State University said the governor’s comments were a clear expression of his new political direction and the loyalty of those who chose to move with him.
Wokocha explained that the governor’s remarks were significant because they came at a time when supporters were seeking clarity on the state’s shifting political landscape. He noted that Fubara’s open acknowledgment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his insistence on full, not partial, support for the administration signaled a firm commitment to his new party.
The law professor said the governor’s choice of words was intentional, especially as many expected him to mention other political figures still holding influential positions in the state. He stressed that some of those individuals remain in the Peoples Democratic Party, and it would have been inappropriate for the governor to reference them while they have not made any public move.
Wokocha added that the same applies to lawmakers who recently defected, describing their decisions as personal choices made independently of any coordinated announcement. He said the governor’s message was simply an expression of his own path and that of those who decided to stand with him.
In his words: “Well, I think they sound very personal. The words suggest personal decisions. Again, remember we are talking about politics and individuals take their decisions and respect the decision of others. So I think, remember that the minister is still in the PDP, so it will be somewhat inappropriate, even if that is the arrangement. It will be somewhat inappropriate for him to drag in the minister who has not said, ‘I have moved from PDP to APC.’ So I think he spoke for himself and his followers. In the same manner, the assembly members who recently re-defected also spoke for themselves.”
