El Rufai: Nobody Knows What Was Taken From His House; His Wife Said They Only Took Bank Tokens-Sowore

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has cast doubt on claims about items allegedly recovered from the residence of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, saying the public has yet to receive clear information on what was actually taken during the search.

Sowore made the remarks during an interview aired by SYMFONI Television on Thursday, March 5, 2026, while reacting to reports surrounding the investigation involving the former governor.

According to him, conflicting narratives about the items reportedly seized during the operation have created confusion and raised questions about the credibility of the claims.

Authorities, he noted, had initially suggested that electronic surveillance equipment used for phone tapping was discovered in the house, an allegation that quickly sparked speculation about the purpose of the devices and the implications for privacy and national security.

However, Sowore said the claim has been challenged by members of el-Rufai’s family, particularly his wife, who reportedly insisted that the only items taken from the residence were bank tokens rather than surveillance equipment.

“Nobody actually knows what was taken from el-Rufai’s house,” Sowore said, pointing to the discrepancy between official claims and the account provided by the former governor’s family.

He argued that such contradictions often emerge in high-profile investigations involving political figures, where dramatic allegations may dominate public discourse at the early stages while concrete evidence remains unclear.

The activist suggested that the situation highlights broader concerns about transparency in politically sensitive investigations in Nigeria. According to him, when security agencies release incomplete or inconsistent information, it fuels public suspicion and makes it difficult for citizens to distinguish between legitimate law-enforcement actions and politically driven actions.

Sowore further stated that the controversy surrounding the alleged discovery of surveillance devices reflects a pattern in which high-profile arrests or searches are sometimes accompanied by sensational claims that later become difficult to substantiate.

The search of el-Rufai’s residence has continued to generate debate in political and legal circles, with analysts calling for official clarification on the items allegedly recovered and the legal basis for the investigation. Observers say transparency in the handling of the case will be critical in determining whether the matter evolves into a formal prosecution or fades amid unresolved questions……See More
