Former Director of the Department of State Security consultant Dennis Amachree has revealed that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai once proposed carpet bombing bandits in their hideouts, but military authorities rejected the suggestion on human rights grounds.
Speaking in an interview with TVC, Amachree recounted the proposal and the military’s rationale for declining. “He was governor of Kaduna state. And then of course when the DSS was tracking the bandits and they were trying to monitor them. El-Rufai came up with the idea that they should carpet bomb the bandits in Kaduna and then the military refused and said we cannot do that because that’s against human rights. You don’t carpet bomb people because of the collateral damage,” he said.
The former DSS director explained that El-Rufai had access to intelligence reports about bandits as part of his gubernatorial security briefings, including information about surveillance operations. According to Amachree, the governor publicly disclosed that security agencies were monitoring bandit communications.
