Egypt Threatens To Raise Military Presence In Sinai Peninsula If Israel Pushes Gazans Out Massively

According to a report by the Times of Israel on Saturday 20 September, 2025, in a potentially serious escalation, Egypt has reportedly issued a warning to Israel that it could ramp up its military presence in the Sinai Peninsula if large numbers of Palestinians are forced out of Gaza and toward its border.

The warning, which was published in Lebanon’s ‘Al Akhbar’ newspaper and attributed to unnamed sources, suggests that Cairo is deeply concerned about the prospect of mass displacement from Gaza. If such a scenario were to unfold, Egyptian forces would mobilize quickly – within 72 hours – and reinforce the border with additional troops, helicopters, and heavy arms, according to the report.

Currently, the number of Egyptian soldiers and weapons stationed in the Sinai is restricted under the 1979 peace treaty with Israel. Any significant changes – especially the movement of heavy weaponry – legally require prior Israeli approval. But in this case, Egypt appears to be signaling that it may be willing to act unilaterally.

An unnamed Egyptian military official, speaking to ‘Al Akhbar’, framed the move as a deterrent – not a provocation. The idea, according to the source, is to “send a clear message” that Egypt won’t sit by while Gazans are pushed toward its territory.

The Rafah border crossing – the key passage between Egypt and Gaza – has remained sealed since early May. Egyptian soldiers continue to patrol their side of the crossing, wary of both a humanitarian spillover and the broader regional implications of a full-blown refugee crisis.  See, More, Here>>>>
