Petroleum economist, Kevin Emmanuel, has stated that Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s concerns about funds management in the petroleum sector are justifiable, given that he is one of the largest taxpayers in the country.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News Television on Wednesday, Emmanuel revealed that Dangote, as one of Nigeria’s biggest taxpayers, paid up to ₦450 billion in taxes in the previous year.
He also backed Dangote’s decision to raise the issue in which he alleged that the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, spent $5 million on his children’s school fees in Switzerland.
Emmanuel further noted that Farouk Ahmed does not earn more than ₦50 million annually as a chief executive, questioning how he could afford the amount allegedly spent on his children’s education abroad.
He said: “Aliko Dangote is one of the largest taxpayers in Nigeria, if not the largest. Last time, I think he paid up to N450 billion in taxes. As a taxpayer, he has the right to say that if a government official is abusing his office, considering that the Authority Chief Executive (Farouk Ahmed) doesn’t earn more than N50 million in salary and allowances in a year.
“There have been indications that the children that schooled in the most elite private schools in Switzerland. The boarding schools in Switzerland are more expensive than any boarding schools in the world.
