Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights activist and former chairman of the national human rights commission recently reacted after former attorney general, Abubakar Malami was charged for knowingly refusing to prosecute terrorism financiers. According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle, he disclosed the reasons why the charge should be withdrawn with immediate effect.
It was no longer news that the former attorney general of the federation and minister for justice, Abubakar Malami was facing several count charges for his actions and inactions while in office.
However, while many believed his predicament was politically motivated and the charges dropped, Chidi Odinkalu, a respected human rights lawyer has pointed out a troubling charge levelled against him.
According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle, he pinpointed the dangers associated with the fresh charge, refusal to prosecute terrorism financiers whose case were brought before him while in office.
Chidi Odinkalu, widely admired for his demands for accountability, pointed out that the charge was extremely serious but lacks constitutional backing and hence, it should be dropped to prevent a precedence.
However, he pointed out that his advice to withdraw the charge was not born out of his likeness for Abubakar Malami, but for the preservation of the standards of the attorney general’s office.
Abubakar Malami, according to Chidi Odinkalu, can only be wished the rule of law and made to answer to his deeds while occupying the honorable office.
