Chidi Odinkalu, a prominent human rights advocate and legal expert, has voiced his reaction on his official X account following remarks by ambassador-designate and former presidential aide Reno Omokri. Omokri had recently stated that he never claimed he would not support President Tinubu. In his post, Odinkalu described Omokri’s denial as “pathetic.”
The controversy began after Omokri, a former member of President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet, made statements during a widely viewed interview on Channels TV. His comments, coming amid debates over the approval of real-time electronic transmission of election results, attracted significant public attention.
Omokri clarified that while he opposed real-time electronic transmission of results, he had never declared that he would not work for President Tinubu. He further explained that his acceptance of the ambassadorial appointment was meant to serve the country rather than the president personally—a position that drew criticism from many observers.
In response, Chidi Odinkalu expressed surprise at Omokri’s apparent shift, pointing out that denying previous statements already in the public domain was not only questionable but also “pathetic.”
Odinkalu’s commentary, shared on Thursday, underscored concerns over consistency and accountability in public discourse.
