The initiative, reported by JM News Network, is part of a broader effort to counter España Vaciada, the phenomenon of rural depopulation that has left thousands of Spanish villages on the brink of abandonment after decades of migration to cities in search of factory work, better services, and economic opportunities that the countryside could no longer provide.
The offer is straightforward and remarkably generous by the standards of most housing markets. Families who agree to move to Arenillas and raise children there will receive a fully renovated home at no cost, along with guaranteed employment in local roles such as running the village bar, maintaining public spaces, or supporting small-scale agriculture and tourism.
The commitment required is long-term residency, meaning families cannot treat the arrangement as temporary or opportunistic. The goal is not to bring in short-term residents but to rebuild a sustainable community that can survive beyond the current generation.
Arenillas is not unique. Across rural Spain, particularly in the interior provinces far from the coast and major cities, villages are facing demographic collapse.
