In an interview with The Punch, former Troop Commander in the Nigerian Army and Director of Information Communication Technology at the Army Signals Headquarters, Gen. Peter Aro (retd.), spoke about the resurgence of Boko Haram and banditry in parts of Northern Nigeria, among other issues.
When asked why the government, despite allegedly having a list of Boko Haram sponsors, had not released the names or prosecuted those involved, he explained that governance often operates in a delicate space between what is known and what can be safely disclosed.
He said releasing such a list at a time when the country was already burdened with multiple layers of tension could trigger unrest that even the truth might not be able to contain.
He added that the issue was not necessarily about fear but about timing, control, and maintaining the fragile balance of power, noting that in a country as unstable as Nigeria, even justice must be exercised with patience to prevent it from becoming a source of further chaos.
Further talking, he said, “Those who now shout the loudest, forget that when the matter concerned their own region, they kept sealed lips. It was during General (Muhammadu) Buhari’s time that these issues surfaced, yet no names were mentioned.”
He questioned why it was happening now that the political tide had shifted, comparing the situation to someone with an untreated wound pretending all was well, only to complain when another person got hurt. He wondered how a man who felt no pain for his own sore could be concerned about another’s healing. See, More, Here>>>>
