According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, November 18, 2025, Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has reacted to the death of Brigadier-General Musa Uba, describing him as a martyr and highlighting broader issues surrounding Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Gumi claimed that Boko Haram insurgents are engaged in a proxy war supported by unidentified international interests. The cleric alleged that the insurgency continues largely because many uneducated and unemployed youths are easily recruited and exploited by enemies of the state.
Sheikh Gumi emphasized that Nigeria should focus on cutting off foreign support for the terrorist group instead of rushing to demonstrate commitment to the fight against insurgency to international powers. He added that Boko Haram is not merely a disorganized militant group but one reinforced by external sponsors, and that threats or criticisms from foreign countries do not constitute genuine assistance.
The cleric further noted that the death of Brigadier-General Uba underscores the active role Muslims play in combating extremism. In his post, he stated:
“Boko Haram are fighting a proxy war, armed by a ‘ghost’ international interest. Our weakness comes from neglecting a teaming number of youth without either education nor employment. So they become ready-made soldiers for the enemies of the state to be exploited. Let us not rush in trying to prove to Trump, we are fighting them from the stalemate our military has achieved so far as we strategize how to cut off their supplies and their foreign sponsors. We should know we are not fighting a ragtag army but people supported by outsiders. These same outsiders that are threatening us with false pretentious claims. If they truly want to assist us, it is not by contemptuous threats and blackmail. If anything, his martyrdom has proven that Muslims are actively engaged in the fight against extremists. May Allah accept his shahadah! May Allah protect us all from all evil and their machinations.”
Sheikh Gumi’s statement is a call for a more strategic approach to tackling insurgency, stressing that addressing foreign support and local vulnerabilities is essential to achieving lasting peace in the region.
