Benin: There Was No Need For Nigeria To Intervene, When America Wanted To Do The Same, We Opposed It

A political analyst, Barrister Darlington Agomuo has criticized Nigeria’s reported involvement in efforts to save President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic during the recent failed coup attempt in the neighbouring country.

Agomuo made the remarks during an interview on Voice of the People TV, where he questioned the justification for Nigeria’s intervention in what he described as the “internal affairs of a sovereign state.”

Barrister Agomuo argued that Nigeria acted inconsistently by showing willingness to intervene in Benin Republic despite having previously resisted similar attempts from foreign powers in its own domestic matters. According to him, principles of sovereignty must be upheld regardless of the political interests at play.

“There was no need for Nigeria to intervene in the internal affair of a sovereign state because when America wanted to do the same here, we opposed it. So how can you now be the chief culprit of what you are condemning?” he stated, stressing that diplomatic consistency is vital for Nigeria’s credibility on the international stage.

The analyst noted that every nation, regardless of size or proximity, retains the right to address its internal challenges without external interference unless such intervention is endorsed by an international mandate or grounded in mutual defence agreements. He added that Nigeria, as a regional leader, must demonstrate respect for sovereignty if it expects similar respect in return.
