Security consultant, Kabir Adamu, has recalled a striking claim made by infamous bandit leader, Bello Turji, about how a personal tragedy set him on the path of criminality.
Adamu, while speaking on Nigeria’s security sector in an interview with Channels TV, narrated Turji’s account during an interview in which the bandit traced his violent career to the arrest of his father. “When he was being interviewed, he said it was his dad’s cattle that entered somebody’s farm, ate the person’s farm produce, and then the dad was arrested, and extortion followed after the arrest. The result in the long run was that the dad died, and he said that is the reason why he entered the criminality that he entered,” Adamu recounted.
The security expert noted that while it is uncertain whether Turji’s story is true or not, the bandit had at least given a reason that has not been adequately interrogated. “Now, whether that is true or not, he has given a reason. Have we, as a people, attempted to address that reason? Is it real that that happened or not? So it’s complex,” Adamu stated.
Adamu stressed that Nigeria’s security and justice institutions must be examined more critically, as their failings affect both criminals and ordinary citizens. “The institutions that we’re discussing impact both the criminals as well as the law-abiding ones. And if we’re going to address this, we need to start holding those institutions to account so that the sanctity of their mandate is protected,” he said.
The consultant also lamented the ineffectiveness of Nigeria’s sprawling security structure despite the vast number of agencies in place. “We cannot have 42 MDAs in security and be where we are,” he warned.
