According to an Anadolu English report of Thursday 19 of February 2026, after Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken attended a large Iranian opposition march in Germany, the Iranian authorities summoned the Belgian ambassador in Tehran.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, a Flemish-language daily, the confirmation came from Belgium’s Foreign Ministry. After Francken spoke at the conference in Munich on Saturday, the country’s envoy was summoned.
The summons is a sign of how delicate the situation is in Tehran over the participation of foreign officials in gatherings planned by Iranian opposition members outside.
A supporter of the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), Francken posted a photo from the demonstration to Instagram, praising the participants and expressing his solidarity with their cause.
What kind, welcoming individuals you are. Nothing will budge us. We shall succeed. Abolish Iran. He expressed his solidarity with you and that it was a privilege to address 250,000 Persian lions.
At the same time as the rally, dozens of world leaders gathered at the Munich Security Conference to talk about threats to international peace and security.
Protesters hoped to increase demands for political change in Iran, and the timing of the event helped bring more attention to their cause.
After his father, Reza Pahlavi, called on Iranians and their allies abroad to band together in opposition to the current political system, the son of Iran’s last monarch called for the meeting.
Symbolic of Iran before the 1979 revolution that deposed the Pahlavi dynasty, the lion and sun, participants waved green, white, and red flags while chanting “regime change” chants.
Iranian officials have also declined to comment on the nature of the conversation, and neither the Belgian nor Iranian governments have released a public statement describing the details of the diplomatic encounter that took place in Tehran. In the midst of Iran’s continuing turmoil, the rally took place.
In response to escalating inflation, a depreciating national currency, and deteriorating economic conditions, small company owners, merchants, and shopkeepers in the nation’s capital began staging strikes and rallies against the government on December 28.
