In a recent interview on Symfoni TV on Sunday, November 30, 2025, human rights attorney Maxwell Opara responded to Orji Kalu’s contentious remarks about Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s trial. Opara condemned Kalu’s comments, asserting they distorted the legal process and compromised justice.
He stated, “If Nnamdi Kanu is guilty, is that an appropriate thing to say?,” emphasizing that public figures should avoid making biased statements concerning ongoing trials. Opara argued that such remarks skew public understanding and exert unnecessary pressure on the judicial system.
He highlighted that every accused individual deserves a fair trial, irrespective of public sentiment or political pressure. Opara warned that premature judgments by politicians or media can jeopardize the legal system’s integrity and the right of defendants to be judged solely based on court evidence.
The attorney also pointed out that Kanu’s trial faced significant procedural issues, such as restricted defense opportunities and denial of final submissions, which underscore the need for a balanced, evidence-based approach in public discussions about the case.
Despite Kanu’s conviction and subsequent imprisonment, Opara pledged to continue seeking all legal avenues while upholding justice principles. He concluded that public discourse should not override a defendant’s rights and emphasized that protecting the judicial process is vital to maintaining public confidence in the rule of law.
