The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stirred fresh political debate after alleging that politicians across Nigeria are eager to gain access to funds belonging to Rivers State, following claims about the size of the state’s financial reserves.
According to a report by Daily Post dated Saturday, December 27, 2025, Wike made the remarks during an end-of-year gathering with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly at the Assembly Quarters.
The event provided a platform for the former Rivers State governor to address concerns surrounding the state’s finances, particularly in the wake of the emergency rule imposed on the state.
Wike claimed that the disclosure of the state’s financial standing has attracted intense interest from politicians outside Rivers State.
He alleged that reports indicating the presence of about N600 billion in the state government’s coffers had triggered a wave of political maneuvering, with individuals seeking to benefit from the situation.
“Nigerian politicians like Rivers’ money,” Wike said while addressing the lawmakers. He went on to criticize the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, for publicly revealing the alleged amount available to the state government.
“Speaker Martins Amaewhule made a mistake by telling Nigerians that there was over N600 billion in the coffers of the Rivers State Government. Now, everyone is using my name to collect money from someone here (Governor Siminalayi Fubara),” he added.
The minister expressed displeasure over what he described as the manipulation of sensitive financial information for personal and political gain. According to him, such actions not only distort public perception but also place unnecessary pressure on the state government and its leadership.
He suggested that misinformation and political name-dropping are being used as tools to exploit the situation.
Wike’s comments highlight ongoing political tensions linked to Rivers State, especially amid heightened scrutiny of its finances under emergency governance measures.
The state has remained a focal point of national political interest, given its economic importance and history of intense political rivalry.
The minister emphasized the need for greater caution in handling information related to public funds, warning that careless disclosures could expose state resources to undue influence and external interference.
He stressed that Rivers State funds should be protected and managed strictly for the welfare and development of its people, rather than becoming a target for political opportunism.
