Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed deep concern about what he sees as increasing marginalisation and targeting of northern Muslims under the current federal government.
In a comprehensive public statement, El-Rufai said Nigeria has undergone a disturbing change since June 2023, warning that this shift poses a serious risk to national unity, equity, and social cohesion.
He stated that the North, which has historically served as a stabilising force in the country, is now being deliberately sidelined, shut out of political influence, and placed under economic strain.
According to El-Rufai, developments across politics, security, religion, and governance reveal a troubling pattern of selective enforcement of justice, religious prejudice, and intentional exclusion of northern Muslims from central national affairs.
He argued that these developments are not random but the result of deliberate and coordinated policies that amount to subtle but systematic persecution.
El-Rufai also referenced the alleged coup plot, which reportedly involved mainly northern Muslim military officers, saying it highlighted another example of bias under the Tinubu administration’s Muslim-Muslim leadership.
He further claimed that recent security operations and corruption investigations have disproportionately targeted northern Muslim individuals, suggesting that such actions appear driven more by the desire to project a positive image internationally than by genuine concerns for national security.
According to him, these trends directly contradict the federal government’s claims of fairness, balance, and inclusiveness.
