All Their Talk Of Democracy, NADECO And Federalism Was Fake, Just Empty Pretense -El-Rufai

According to a report by Daily Trust on September 22, 2025, former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of betraying the long-standing struggle for democracy and true federalism in Nigeria.

“All their talk of democracy, NADECO and federalism was fake, just empty pretense”, El-Rufai declared

El-Rufai made the statement while receiving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at his residence over the weekend. Atiku had paid him a solidarity visit after thugs disrupted the inauguration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State.

The attack led to a heated exchange of accusations between El-Rufai and the Kaduna State government, each blaming the other for orchestrating the disruption.

During the visit, El-Rufai criticized the Tinubu administration for what he described as a total abandonment of the democratic ideals it once claimed to defend. He argued that those who had championed democracy under the banner of NADECO and called for genuine federalism were now doing the opposite in power.

According to him, the present administration has chosen to concentrate authority at the center, disregarding the principles of power devolution and inclusivity. He described the conduct of the government as a disgrace and a deliberate undermining of Nigeria’s democratic values.

“Honestly sir, to me, it is even a disgrace. I mean, for people to behave the way they are behaving, it means that all the years of saying that we are for democracy and NADECO, all the claims that we are fighting for true federalism and so on—it was all a pretense, all fake again,” El-Rufai said.
