ADC: Obi’s People Said, ‘It’s Obi Or Nothing’; Atiku’s People Said, ‘Turaki Must Get A Ticket’ —Isah

In a recent interview on Silverbird N24, former President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors, Mustapha Isah, analysed the current dynamics within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election, highlighting the internal contestations and competing ambitions among key political figures. Speaking on Inside Politics, Isah discussed how the ADC, as a coalition platform, is navigating the pressures of managing multiple presidential hopefuls while trying to maintain party cohesion.

According to Isah, “Obi’s people said, ‘It’s Obi or nothing’; Atiku’s people said, ‘Turaki must get a ticket,’” He explained that the competing demands from supporters of different aspirants are creating tension within the party, as each faction pushes for its preferred candidate to secure the presidential nomination.

Isah noted that Peter Obi’s move to the ADC has energised his loyal base, many of whom insist that he should be the sole choice for the ticket, reflecting both his personal influence and the high expectations of his supporters. On the other hand, he highlighted that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s allies are advocating for former Governor Babangida Turaki to be considered, demonstrating the negotiation and balancing act the ADC leadership must undertake.

The former editors’ guild president warned that managing these internal pressures will be crucial for the ADC if it hopes to mount a credible challenge against the incumbent in 2027. He stressed that unresolved rivalries or perceptions of unfairness could weaken the coalition and reduce its effectiveness at the polls.

Isah also pointed out that the ADC’s structure, being a coalition of influential opposition figures rather than a traditional party with deep grassroots networks, makes the primaries and candidate selection process particularly sensitive. He concluded that the way these competing ambitions are resolved will not only determine who leads the party ticket but also signal the ADC’s capacity to unite diverse political interests into a winning strategy for the upcoming election.
