Abuja Land: Ex-Police Officer Honors Military Officer’s Bravery With N5000 From Pension Allowance

A retired police officer announced on Wednesday that he would donate N5000 out of his monthly pension of N49,000 to the young military officer at the center of the alleged land grabbing in Abuja.

Recall that, on Tuesday, Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, was involved in a heated argument with military personnel acting on instruction at the site of a disputed plot of land in Abuja.

The donor, Chief Sunny Anyanwu (UGWUMBA), a retired Deputy Superintendent Of Police (DSP), in a release tagged ‘Public Statement’ posted on his Facebook page, honored the military officer with the N5000 special award as the military officer of the year 2025.

According to the donor, the officer at the center of the face-off with the Minister has demonstrated exceptional professionalism, composure, and discipline.

The donor writes,”I, DSP Sunny Anyanwu (Rtd), have decided to present a Special Award for the Military Officer of the Year 2025.

“Out of my modest ₦49,000 monthly pension, I have chosen to donate ₦5,000 to the Naval Officer who had an open and courageous confrontation with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

“That officer demonstrated exceptional professionalism, composure, and discipline. Qualities that reflect the best traditions of the Nigerian Navy and remind us of the high standards of British-trained officers.

“I also humbly advise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honour this young officer with the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) award in recognition of his exemplary service and patriotism.

“His official bank details should be forwarded through his department for the symbolic presentation.

“This act is not just a gesture. It is a statement. For 35 years, I endured similar challenges in service and now live on a ₦49,000 pension. Yet, I remain proud to stand for truth, courage, and integrity in uniform.

Chief Sunny Anyanwu (UGWUMBA),  congratulated the young officer, whom he described as a future General, and saluted all men and women who continue to serve Nigeria with honour.
