Abacha Locked Me Up & I Almost Lost My Mind;I Saw Razor In Toilet & Thought Of Cutting My Wrist—Oroh

In an interview on State Affairs with Edmund Obilo, a former commissioner in Edo State, Hon Abdul Oroh, stated that he was locked up in solitary confinement along with other pro-democracy activists by General Sani Abacha

Oroh said he was detained for about a year at Inter-Center near Ikoyi Cemetery. He said while in detention he almost lost his mind. He said he started paying unusual attention to small things like how cockroaches behave and watching bats as they flew.

Oroh stated that at one point, he saw a razor blade in the toilet and began to think about ending his life with it due to the harsh conditions he was in.

In Oroh’s words: “When Abacha detained us, we thought to ourselves, ‘We are used to being harassed; we will soon be released.’ We thought so, but we ended up being detained for a year before we were released. I almost lost my mind, I was beginning to show interest in the way cockroaches behave, I look at the bats when they fly. It was at Inter-Center, near Ikoyi Cemetery, that was where we were.
