Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has given a firsthand account of his imprisonment experience under the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha, detailing how he continued to hold out hope for survival despite the uncertainty surrounding his fate.
In a video posted by Symfoni TV, Obasanjo disclosed that despite being imprisoned, he maintained a firm belief that he would eventually be released. No clue as to when or how that would occur. He said that this belief sustained him throughout his trying time in jail.
On the day, Obasanjo recounted a pivotal moment. Abruptly, Abacha passed away. He claimed that a prison guard approached him and offered his congratulations. He inquired about the congrats, but was simply informed that Abacha had passed away. Obasanjo first dismissed the news as a joke, but he was ultimately persuaded. But he came to the conclusion that it was true when more warders came carrying the same message.
He went on to say that his release from jail just a week after Abacha’s death was nothing less than divine providence. Obasanjo said that grace and faith were demonstrated by his eventual liberation and survival.
According to Obasanjo, it was “the day”. A warder approached me after Abacha’s death and wished me congratulations, sir. “What’s the matter warder? ” I asked. “Our enemy has died,” he declared. I asked him who his adversary was, and he said Abacha.
