Christians Mass Kidnapping: We Must Use All Tools At Our Disposal to Pressure Nigerian Govt—Pompeo

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has strongly condemned a recent mass abduction in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria, characterizing the incident as a grave assault on Christian communities and urging a tougher international response to Nigeria’s security crisis.

In remarks shared on his verified social media account, Pompeo described the episode as another appalling case of large-scale kidnappings targeting Christians in the country.

He argued that the persistence of such attacks underscores the need for urgent and resolute action, both from Nigerian authorities and their international partners.

Pompeo called on the United States and allied nations to apply sustained diplomatic, political, and security pressure on Abuja, insisting that the Nigerian government must confront the crisis with what he termed the level of seriousness it warrants.

According to him, repeated incidents of mass abductions demonstrate that existing measures have failed to deter armed groups responsible for the violence.

The comments followed reports that gunmen attacked multiple churches in a community in southern Kaduna, abducting numerous worshippers during church services.

Although some of those taken were later said to have escaped, many others remain unaccounted for, fueling anxiety among residents and religious leaders in the area.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of rural communities across north-west and north-central Nigeria, where criminal gangs and armed groups have continued to carry out kidnappings, raids, and other violent attacks with alarming frequency.

Pompeo’s reaction comes amid growing international attention on Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly as they relate to religious freedom and the protection of minority communities.

Over the years, U.S. lawmakers and rights groups have repeatedly warned that unchecked violence and mass abductions threaten national stability and social cohesion.

Nigerian authorities have maintained that security forces are intensifying efforts to rescue abducted victims and apprehend those responsible.
