In a recent video shared on Facebook on Friday, January 23, 2026, Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chieftain Asari Dokubo opened up about the physical and emotional toll of his years of struggle, using his personal experience to address persistent public speculation about his health.
According to Dokubo, “What is on my body is a sign of a bomb; it is not rashes. Do you know what I have gone through?”, a statement he made while explaining that marks seen on his body are the result of traumatic experiences rather than illness. He said the comments were necessary to correct misleading assumptions and casual judgments made about him.
Dokubo explained that many people speak confidently about his past without understanding the realities he endured. According to him, the scars on his body are reminders of violent encounters and hardships linked to his involvement in prolonged struggles, rather than medical conditions as some have suggested.
He noted that such experiences have shaped his worldview and reinforced his belief in resilience and sacrifice. Dokubo stressed that surviving years of conflict leaves lasting effects, both physically and mentally, which outsiders often fail to appreciate.
The activist also criticized what he described as a culture of trivializing suffering, saying many Nigerians discuss trauma lightly without recognizing the depth of pain others have endured. According to him, survival itself is a testimony to endurance and strength.
Dokubo further stated that his remarks were not meant to attract sympathy but to assert the reality of his past. He emphasized that history should be spoken about truthfully, not reduced to rumors or mockery.
He added that understanding the sacrifices made by individuals involved in historical struggles is important for national reflection and reconciliation. According to Dokubo, acknowledging pain and experience is a necessary step toward healing and mutual respect in society.
